Groundbreaking Study Shows How Water Fasting Can Slow Aging & Regenerate Immune System
Cutting edge research study reveals that occasionally adopting a fasting mimicking diet may lead to dramatic health benefits, such as slowing aging and resetting the immune system.

This fasting mimicking diet reduces the daily intake of calories during the fasting period down to 34 to 54% of their daily average, pointing out a specific balance of micronutrients, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and.
In previous research of his, Longo has demonstrated how fasting can protect immune and other cells from the toxic impact of chemotherapy, while at the same time starving out malignant cells. A 72-hour fasting protected people with cancer against the toxic effects of chemotherapy:
“Chemotherapy causes significant collateral damage to the immune system. The results of this study suggest fasting may mitigate the harmful effects of chemotherapy,” said co-author Tanya Dorff, who works as an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and Hospital.
Currently, Longo and his colleagues are examining the possibilities for these health effects to be applicable to different systems and organs in the body, next to the immune system.
“The good news is the body got rid of the parts in the system which might be damaged or old and inefficient parts, during the fasting. If you start with a system heavily damaged by chemotherapy or aging, fasting cycles can generate, literally, a new immune system,” he said.
“It’s about reprogramming the body so it enters a slower aging mode, but also rejuvenating it through stem cell-based regeneration,” Longo continues. “It’s not a typical diet because it isn’t something you need to stay on.”
“If the results remain as positive as the current ones, I believe this FMD will represent the first safe and effective intervention to promote positive changes associated with longevity and health span, which can be recommended by a physician,” stated Longo for USC News. “We will soon meet with FDA officers to pursue several FDA claims for disease prevention and treatment.”
Despite the benefits of water-only fasting, Longo advised against it with the argument that this type of fasting should only be performed in specialized clinics. Moreover, he warned people not to even attempt the fasting mimicking diet before first consulting a physician and asking for medical supervision throughout the entire process.
“Not everyone is healthy enough to fast for five days, and the health consequences can be severe for a few who do it improperly,” Longo said. “Water-only fasting should only be done in a specialized clinic. Also, certain types of very low-calorie diets, and particularly those with high protein content, can increase the incidence of gallstones in women at risk.”
In contrast, people can do the fasting mimicking diet anywhere under the supervision of a medical doctor and carefully following the instructions defined in the clinical trials.
However, Dr. Longo advises people with diabetes not to try fasting or the fasting mimicking diet while they are still taking insulin supplements, metformin or similar medications. Furthermore, people that have a body mass index of under 18 should not try this diet as well.
